Fire Resistant or Enhanced fire resistant ?

We are often asked what is the difference between fire resistant and enhanced fire resistant….. so Fire Resistant Cable,   is the most used name that describes a cable that has been designed and manufactured to withstand the conditions associated with a fire and maintain its ability to transmit data or power. There are varying levels of performance standards across Europe, but the main ones are:

Enhanced:  The Cable must be able to maintain insulation and continuity of electric current during the fire test at temperatures of 930 deg c +/- 40c for 2 hours, mechanical shock for 60 min. followed by simultaneous exposure to water spray and mechanical shock for a further 60 minutes. The fire test designed specifically to test this requirement is BS8434-2

Standard: The cable must be able to maintain insulation and continuity of electric current during fire tests at temperatures of 830 deg c. +/- 40deg c for 30 minutes, mechanical shock for 15 minutes, followed by simultaneous exposure to water spray and mechanical shock for a further 15 min.  The fire test designed specifically for this requirement is BS8434-1
